Programs

Each day, many people – people just like you – provide help to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and partners share a mission of serving those who serve at home.

We roll up our sleeves and donate time, money and hard work. We provide support to military and first responders' children in order to enrich families to connect, restore, and thrive.

We do this every day because Hero Kids Foundation is needed - every day.

Areas of Support

UNTAMED SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Learn riding in a safe and fun environment. Lessons for children and adults are led by certified instructors and run from 30 – 60 minutes depending on the needs of the rider. Lessons are offered weekly throughout the year.

In collaboration with Untamed Spirit of Pungo Virginia, Hero Kids Foundation is able to provide nature based equine facilitated psychotherapy. Untamed Spirit founder Barb Ford, M.A, NCC, CTRI, provides programs in wellness, women’s issues, solution focused therapy, and family counseling.

This nature based program allows Hero Kids Foundation to provide a unique opportunity for the children, and family, to deal with the daily stress of having a parent(s) in uniform serving their community and country.

Our Scholarship provided access to: one on one (1 child to 1 horse) therapy, children’s group and equine therapy and opportunity for family counseling in a nature based setting. Scholarships are $600.00 and the number of sessions a family receives is dependent on combination of therapeutic modalities. Average number of sessions is 10.

ADOLESCENT SERVICE DOG PROGRAM

Training service dogs for adolescents living with debilitating anxiety disorders, like social anxiety, Depression and PTSD,  requires very specialized knowledge and skills – in both the trainer and the dog. These service dogs must possess a perceptive nature, a courteous, compliant temperament and an intuitive spirit in order to perform their duties independently when the individual is facing a crisis. Hero Kids Foundation's training team works to identify and evaluate these unique dogs, and then train them to recognize and interrupt the behaviors associated with anxiety, panic attacks and nightmares. HKF’s trainers evaluate both dogs and applicants in order to effectively pair a successful team.

Each dog is trained to a standard, and additional training is customized to the individual needs of the applicant. HKF is committed to working together with the applicant and their service dog as they learn to work as a team to increase physical, emotional and social self-sufficiency. The dogs are trained to perform many services including, but not limited to:

• Alleviate anxiety/distress and provide psycho-emotional grounding by nudging, pawing, and leaning.
• Assist a person in waking from night terrors and nightmares.
• Distract a person from an event or specific maladaptive behavior by nudging, pawing, and licking.
• Bring medication to a person on command or when alerted to do so by a timer/alarm.
• Stand in front of or circle an individual in crowded areas in order to create personal space in a non-aggressive manner.
• Lead an individual safely to a building exit when experiencing an anxiety or panic attack.
• Get help by alerting another person or activate an emergency button or alert system.

A trained adolescent service dog is a tool and is not intended to substitute or replace current therapeutic or medication treatment plan.

NATURE BASED ACTIVITIES

In our nature based programs we will provide team building and family dynamics development while engaging in activities such as raised gardens, crop development, outdoor team building activities and nature based family communication and connection activities. We also are developing opportunities for family weekend destination activities that would provide a more personal assistance to families. We look forward to providing this programming in the near future. Please check back for updates!
